Choosing the right grade level in PicoBuddy is essential for creating a positive and effective learning experience. The ideal reading level is one that isn't too easy, which can lead to boredom, nor too hard, which can cause frustration. Instead, aim for a level that is challenging but manageable, fostering growth and confidence.

This guide will walk you through a simple, step-by-step method to determine the best grade level for each student.

Step 1: Select a Grade Level in the Library

1. Go to the main Library page in PicoBuddy.
2. Locate the Grade Level dropdown menu. This is your starting point for exploring appropriate reading material.
3. Choose a general band (e.g., Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, Middle School) or select a specific grade (Grade 1–8).
4. Browse the passages available within that selected grade level. Each passage offers a unique opportunity for learning and growth.

Step 2: Open a Passage

1. Click on "View Passage" for a text that seems potentially suitable based on the title or topic.
2. Preview the text before assigning it. This allows you to get a feel for the content and complexity.

Step 3: Use the 5-Sentence Check

This simple check helps you quickly gauge if a passage is a good fit.

1. Have the student read the first 5 sentences of the passage.
2. After they read, ask the following questions:
   • Do they read smoothly? Are they stumbling over words or pausing frequently?
   • Do they understand most of the words? A few unfamiliar words are fine, but excessive vocabulary gaps can hinder comprehension.
   • Can they explain what they just read? Can they summarize the main idea or retell the information in their own words?

Interpreting the Results

• Too easy: If the text feels too easy, with smooth reading and complete understanding, try one grade level higher.
• Too hard: If the text feels too difficult, with frequent struggles and limited comprehension, try one grade level lower.
• Just right: If the student reads smoothly, understands the majority of the words, and can explain what they read, then that grade level is likely a good fit!
