Early Life and Inventions
Garrett Morgan was born in 1877 in Ohio. He didn't have much money, but he was very smart. He moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and started working. He fixed sewing machines, and he was really good at it. He invented a belt fastener for sewing machines. This was his first invention!
The Safety Hood
One day, Garrett saw firefighters struggling to breathe in a smoky building. He wanted to help them. So, he invented a special hood that had a wet sponge inside. The sponge helped to filter out the smoke and let the firefighters breathe easier. This invention was called the Safety Hood, and it won an award! It helped many firefighters stay safe while saving people from burning buildings.
The Traffic Signal
Garrett Morgan also invented a traffic signal. Before his invention, there were only two kinds of signals: stop and go. But sometimes, cars would crash when the light changed quickly. Garrett invented a third signal – a "wait" signal. This gave drivers time to stop safely. He sold his traffic signal to a big company, and it helped make roads safer for everyone!
