Trapped in Death Valley

The sun beat down on Mateo's back like a fiery hammer. He wiped the sweat from his brow, but it was no use. The air was thick, heavy, and hotter than anything he'd ever felt. He was in Death Valley, a place known for its extreme heat.

Mateo had been hiking with his dad when they got separated. Now, he was alone, lost, and his water bottle was empty. He remembered his dad's words: "In the desert, water is life." Mateo knew he had to find some, and fast.

He trudged on, his eyes scanning the landscape. Death Valley looked like a sea of sand and rock, stretching out forever. Canyons with high rock walls surrounded him. The sun reflected back from every surface, making it feel like he was trapped inside an oven. He remembered learning about deserts in school. Deserts are places that get very little rain. Because of this, they can be very hot during the day and cold at night.

Suddenly, he spotted something in the distance. A small, green bush! Hope surged through him. Plants need water to live. Maybe, just maybe, there was water nearby. He hurried toward it, his legs aching with every step. As he got closer, he saw it – a tiny spring bubbling up from the ground! Mateo knelt down and drank deeply, the cool water a welcome relief. He knew he wasn't out of danger yet, but he had a chance. He had found life in the middle of Death Valley.

With renewed energy, Mateo followed the small stream of water. He knew that if he followed it, he would eventually find his way back to his dad. He thought of the desert animals that also survive in this extreme heat like the desert tortoise and the roadrunner. Mateo was determined to be just as tough as them. He looked toward the mountains and started walking, and hoped he'd see his dad again soon.
