Rise to Fame

Dempsey's boxing career took off in the 1910s. He quickly gained a reputation for his fierce fighting style. He was known for his relentless attacks and devastating knockout power. In 1919, he won the heavyweight championship by defeating Jess Willard in a brutal fight. Willard quit after three rounds, badly beaten.

Championship Reign

Dempsey's time as champion was filled with exciting matches. He defended his title several times against tough opponents. His fights drew huge crowds and made him a national celebrity. One of his most famous fights was against Georges Carpentier in 1921, which was the first million-dollar gate in boxing history. He also fought Luis Firpo in 1923, a wild and chaotic fight that ended with Firpo being knocked out.

Loss and Later Life

In 1926, Dempsey lost the heavyweight title to Gene Tunney. He fought Tunney again in 1927 in what became known as "The Long Count" fight. Dempsey knocked Tunney down, but hesitated to go to a neutral corner, delaying the referee's count. Tunney got up and eventually won the fight. After boxing, Dempsey became a successful businessman and restaurateur. He remained a beloved figure until his death in 1983.
