The Day I Missed My Turn in Space

It all started with a Moon flyby – a super-cool school trip! Our class, the Space Cadets, were finally going to see the Moon up close. I had packed my space suit (sparkly, of course), my Moon boots (extra bouncy), and, most importantly, a giant bag of Cosmic Crunchies.

We zoomed through space in the Star Hopper, a spaceship that looked suspiciously like a school bus with rockets attached. Everyone was buzzing with excitement, pointing at planets and stars. But me? I had my eye on the prize: those delicious Cosmic Crunchies. They were strawberry flavored and tasted like little explosions of space dust in your mouth.

"Attention, Space Cadets!" boomed Captain Brenda's voice over the intercom. "Prepare for lunar flyby! Each cadet will have one minute at the viewing window to observe the Moon's surface."

One minute? That was barely enough time to finish half a bag of Cosmic Crunchies! Still, I knew this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I grabbed my camera and waited impatiently in line.

Finally, it was my turn. I bounced to the window, camera in hand, ready to snap a picture of the majestic Moon. But then, disaster struck! I opened my bag of Cosmic Crunchies, and the sweet, strawberry scent filled the air. I popped one in my mouth. Oh. My. Stars. It was the best Cosmic Crunchie EVER.

I ate another one. And another. Before I knew it, I was lost in a Cosmic Crunchie-induced haze of strawberry goodness. When I finally snapped out of it, Captain Brenda was tapping me on the shoulder.

"Next!" she said, a little impatiently. "Hurry now, Cadet!"

"Wait!" I cried. "I didn't see the Moon!"

"Sorry, Cadet," Captain Brenda said with a shrug. "Your minute is up."

Dejected, I shuffled back to my seat, my bag of Cosmic Crunchies suddenly tasting like cardboard. Everyone else was talking about craters and moon rocks. I had missed it all. All for a snack.

Then, a brilliant idea sparked in my mind. I pulled out my space phone (yes, they have those) and snapped a selfie. I made a goofy face, with my thumb up. I sent it to Mom with the caption: "Having a blast in space! Wish you were here!" Then I tucked back into my Cosmic Crunchies.

Later that day, Mom texted back. "Great selfie, sweetie! But is that the Moon I see in the window? It looks kinda far away!" I laughed. Maybe missing my turn wasn't so bad after all. At least I had a funny story to tell and proof that I had been to space...sort of.
