The Curious Case of the Disappearing Stars

Lily loved science, especially astronomy. Every night, she would climb onto her rooftop with her telescope and gaze at the stars. One clear evening, Lily noticed something peculiar: three of her favorite stars were missing!

A Rooftop Mystery

“That’s impossible,” she whispered, adjusting her telescope. “Stars don’t just disappear.” Determined to solve the mystery, Lily grabbed her notebook and started taking notes. She remembered learning about constellations, patterns of stars that seemed to form shapes in the sky. The missing stars were part of the Great Bear constellation, a group of stars that looked like a big dipper.

The Search Begins

Lily decided to visit her neighbor, Mr. Garcia, a retired science teacher. Mr. Garcia always had interesting stories and explanations for everything. “Mr. Garcia,” she said, “I think some stars have disappeared!”

Mr. Garcia chuckled. “Disappeared, you say? Tell me more, Lily.”

Lily explained about the missing stars in the Great Bear constellation. Mr. Garcia listened intently, stroking his chin. “Hmm,” he said thoughtfully. “It’s unlikely the stars have truly disappeared. More likely, something is blocking our view of them.”

Light Pollution

Mr. Garcia explained that sometimes, bright city lights can make it difficult to see fainter stars. This is called light pollution. He showed Lily a map of the city and pointed out areas with the most light. “See, Lily? The closer we are to these bright areas, the harder it is to see the dimmer stars.”

Lily looked at the map, a lightbulb flickered on in her mind. The new stadium built downtown was very close to where she lived. It had extremely bright lights. “Could the stadium lights be hiding the stars?” she asked.

Solving the Mystery

Mr. Garcia smiled. “It’s very possible. We can test our theory.” He suggested they drive to a spot far outside the city, away from the bright lights. That night, Lily and Mr. Garcia drove to a dark field. Lily set up her telescope. As her eyes adjusted, she looked toward the Great Bear constellation. There they were! The missing stars shone brightly in the dark sky.

“They’re back!” Lily exclaimed, feeling triumphant. "So, it was the stadium lights all along."

Mr. Garcia nodded. “Exactly, Lily. Sometimes, the answer to a scientific mystery is as simple as finding a darker place to look.” Lily learned that even though the stars were always there, sometimes it takes a little detective work and a clear sky to see them.
