The Courage of Clara
The school bell rang, signaling the end of another long day at Northwood Elementary. Clara loved school, especially reading time, but today, a knot of worry tightened in her stomach. As she walked toward the bike racks, she noticed a group of older kids surrounding a smaller boy named Alex. Alex was known for his bright smile and even brighter collection of colorful socks.
Clara hesitated. She knew these kids. They were known for their teasing and unkind words. It looked like they were making fun of Alex's dinosaur socks. Clara’s heart pounded in her chest. She never liked confrontation. What if they turned on her? What if they laughed at her too? These thoughts raced through her mind like squirrels chasing each other in the park.
But then, she remembered what her grandfather always said: "Sometimes, Clara, the bravest thing you can do is stand up for what's right, even when it's scary.” She took a deep breath and started walking towards the group.
“Hey!” Clara called out, her voice a little shaky. The older kids turned around, surprised. “Leave him alone.”
The leader of the group, a boy named Mark, scoffed. “Mind your own business, Clara. This doesn’t concern you.”
Clara stood her ground. “Yes, it does. It’s not okay to make fun of people.” She looked directly at Mark, trying to project all the courage she could muster. “His socks are awesome, and you should leave him alone.”
To Clara’s surprise, Mark’s face softened. Maybe it was her unwavering gaze, or maybe it was the fact that other kids were starting to notice the commotion. He mumbled something about “just messing around” and the group dispersed.
Alex looked up at Clara, his eyes wide with gratitude. “Thanks, Clara,” he whispered. “They do this a lot.”
“Anytime, Alex,” Clara said, managing a small smile. As they walked their bikes home together, Clara felt a warmth spread through her. She had been scared, but she had done the right thing. The consequences? Well, Mark and his friends mostly avoided her after that. Some of the other kids even started being nicer to Alex, and a few even complimented his socks! Clara learned that day that even the smallest act of courage can make a big difference.
