The Case of the Missing Mascot

The Northwood Middle School gymnasium buzzed with pre-game excitement. Tonight was the big night: the championship basketball game against their rivals, the Southwood Serpents. But amidst the cheers and squeaking sneakers, a sense of panic began to spread. Monty, the school’s beloved mascot – a giant, inflatable moose – was missing.

Principal Thompson, a usually calm man, was pacing frantically. "Where could he be?" he exclaimed, his voice cracking slightly. "The game starts in an hour!"

Sarah, a seventh-grader known for her sharp wit and even sharper observational skills, overheard the commotion. Her best friend, Josh, a self-proclaimed detective wannabe, was already on the case, clipboard in hand. "Don't worry, Principal Thompson!" Josh declared. "The Great Josh is on it!"

"Need any help, Great Josh?" Sarah asked, a smirk playing on her lips.

Josh puffed out his chest. "As a matter of fact, yes! You have a knack for noticing things I miss. Start by questioning the Pep Squad."

Sarah approached a group of cheerleaders huddled in a corner, their faces etched with worry. "Hey guys, have you seen Monty?" she asked.

The head cheerleader, Emily, shook her head. "We saw him backstage about an hour ago, but when we went to inflate him, he was gone!"

Meanwhile, Josh was interviewing the janitor, Mr. Henderson, a man known for his tall tales and even taller mop. "Did you see anything unusual, Mr. Henderson?" Josh asked, holding his clipboard high.

Mr. Henderson stroked his chin thoughtfully. "Well, now that you mention it, I did see a couple of suspicious-looking characters lurking near the back door earlier. They were wearing Southwood Serpents jackets, but their faces were hidden by hoodies."

Sarah and Josh exchanged a look. This was getting serious. They decided to split up. Sarah headed towards the backstage area, while Josh went to check the back door.

Backstage, Sarah noticed something peculiar. A trail of glitter, the same kind used by the drama club, led from Monty's storage area towards the emergency exit. That's odd, she thought. The drama club had been practicing their rendition of Hamlet all week. What would they want with Monty?

Josh, meanwhile, found faint tire tracks in the muddy ground near the back door. They appeared to belong to a small vehicle, like a golf cart. He remembered seeing the golf cart parked outside the faculty lounge earlier. Could it be connected?

Sarah and Josh met back near the principal's office, their minds racing. "Glitter trail!" Sarah exclaimed.

"Tire tracks!" Josh countered.

They looked at each other, and then it hit them simultaneously. The drama club needed a spectacular prop for their finale, and what could be more spectacular than a giant, inflatable moose?

They raced towards the auditorium, bursting through the doors just as the curtain was rising. And there he was, Monty, center stage, wearing a tiny crown and holding a plastic skull. The audience gasped, then erupted into laughter.

The drama club director, Mrs. Davis, looked mortified. "We borrowed him without asking!" she confessed. "We were going to return him before the game, but we lost track of time!"

Principal Thompson, initially furious, couldn't help but chuckle. Monty was returned to his rightful place just in time for the game, and Northwood Middle School went on to win the championship. As for Sarah and Josh, they were hailed as heroes, the dynamic duo who solved the Case of the Missing Mascot.
