Rhinos: Armored Giants

What is a Rhino?

Rhinos are mammals, just like us! They are known for their thick skin and, of course, their horns. In fact, the word "rhinoceros" comes from Greek words meaning "nose horn." There are five different species of rhinos living today: White rhinos, Black rhinos, Indian rhinos, Javan rhinos, and Sumatran rhinos. They live in Africa and Asia, in grasslands and forests.

Amazing Armor

Rhino skin may look tough, but it's actually quite sensitive! That's why rhinos often roll around in mud. The mud acts like sunscreen and protects them from the sun and biting insects. Rhino skin can be up to 2 inches thick in some places!

Horns Aren't Just for Show

A rhino's horn is made of keratin, the same stuff your fingernails and hair are made of! They use their horns for many things, like defending themselves against predators, digging for food, and even attracting a mate. Male rhinos also use their horns to fight each other for territory and the right to mate with females.

A Rhino's Diet

Rhinos are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. White rhinos have wide, square lips perfect for grazing on grass. Black rhinos have pointed lips that they use to grab leaves and twigs from bushes. The other rhino species eat a variety of plants, depending on what's available in their habitat.

Rhinos Need Our Help

Sadly, rhinos are in danger. Many rhinos have been killed by poachers who sell their horns. Some people believe that rhino horns have medicinal properties, but that's not true. Because of poaching and habitat loss, some rhino species are critically endangered. Organizations around the world are working hard to protect rhinos and their habitats so that these amazing animals can continue to roam the Earth.
