Oʻahu: The Heart of Hawai'i
Oʻahu, known as "The Gathering Place," is the third largest of the Hawaiian Islands. But even though it's not the biggest, it's where most people in Hawai'i live! Imagine an island filled with bustling cities, peaceful beaches, and amazing mountains.
Diamond Head
One of the most famous landmarks on Oʻahu is Diamond Head. It's not really a diamond, but an old volcano! Long ago, Hawaiians called it Lēʻahi. When British sailors saw shiny crystals on the beach, they thought they had found diamonds and named it Diamond Head.
Honolulu and Waikiki
The capital city of Hawai'i, Honolulu, is on Oʻahu. Right next to Honolulu is Waikiki, a famous beach known for its soft sand, clear water, and tall hotels. People come from all over the world to swim, surf, and relax in Waikiki.
More Than Just Beaches
Oʻahu isn't just about beaches and cities. You can explore beautiful rainforests, hike up mountains, and learn about Hawaiian culture. The island has many parks, museums, and historical sites to visit.
A Mix of Cultures
