My California Dream
Entry 1: September 5th
Dear Diary,
Today marks the beginning of something huge, something I’ve been dreaming about since I was a little kid staring out the window of our cramped apartment in Chicago. We’re moving to California! Dad got a job at a tech company in Silicon Valley, and Mom says this is our chance to "chase the sunshine and opportunities." I’m mostly excited, but also a little terrified. Leaving everything familiar is… well, it’s a lot.
I hope I can make new friends easily. I'm worried people in California will be different than me. Will they like my Midwestern accent? Will they get my jokes? I'm bringing my favorite baseball glove. Maybe playing catch with new friends will be a great way to connect!
Entry 2: September 12th
Dear Diary,
California is… different. The air smells like flowers and something salty, and the sky is so blue it almost hurts your eyes. Our new house is bigger than our old apartment, and it even has a backyard with a lemon tree!
School starts next week, and the butterflies in my stomach are doing acrobatics. I went to the registration day and saw some of the kids. They all seem really cool and confident. One girl, Maya, even said hi to me! She had bright pink hair and a skateboard. Maybe making friends won’t be so hard after all.
Entry 3: September 20th
Dear Diary,
School is… okay. Maya is awesome! She introduced me to her friends, and they’re all into skateboarding and making movies. It’s so different from my old school, where everyone was obsessed with sports. I'm beginning to understand what Mom means by "opportunities". I'm looking at joining the school's film club. I've always liked making movies on my phone. This could be my chance!
But… I miss my old friends. We used to play baseball every day after school. Here, nobody seems to care about baseball. Maybe I need to find a baseball team outside of school.
Entry 4: October 10th
Dear Diary,
I joined the film club, and it's amazing! We're working on a short film about the history of our town. Maya is the director, and I'm helping with the camera work. I’m learning so much about filmmaking, and I even got to use a real camera! I also found a baseball league, and I've had a couple practices. It feels good to be back on the field.
I'm realizing that California isn't just about sunshine and beaches. It's about trying new things, meeting new people, and finding out what you're really passionate about. Maybe this California dream is turning into something even better than I imagined.
Entry 5: November 1st
Dear Diary,
I feel like I have lived here forever! The film club's movie is almost finished, and the baseball team is doing really well. My old friends and I still text sometimes, and it is good to keep in touch. But Maya and the others are like family to me, now.
This move was scary at first, but it has brought unexpected changes and challenges. I have become more flexible and open to new ideas and possibilities. California is a place of dreams for many people, and now it is a place of personal growth for me. This is my California Dream, and it's even better than I could have ever imagined.
