Life in the Arctic

Have you ever wondered what it's like to live where it's super cold all the time? That's what life is like for animals that live in the Arctic! The Arctic is a very cold place around the North Pole. Animals that live there have special ways to stay warm and find food.

Furry and Feathered Friends

Many Arctic animals have thick fur or feathers to keep them warm. Polar bears have a thick layer of fat, called blubber, under their skin. This blubber helps them stay warm even when they swim in icy water. Arctic foxes have thick fur that turns white in the winter to help them hide in the snow. Birds like the Arctic tern have lots of feathers that keep them warm in the air and on land. Some animals, like caribou, have hollow hairs that trap air and keep them warm, like wearing a puffy jacket!

Finding Food in the Cold

Finding food can be hard in the Arctic. Polar bears hunt seals by waiting near holes in the ice. When a seal comes up for air, the polar bear catches it. Arctic foxes eat small animals like lemmings, and sometimes they follow polar bears to eat leftovers. Arctic terns eat fish and insects that they find in the water and on land. Some animals, like musk oxen, eat plants that grow under the snow.

Staying Safe

Staying safe is also important. Many Arctic animals use camouflage to hide from predators or to sneak up on their prey. The white fur of polar bears and Arctic foxes helps them blend in with the snow. Some animals, like walruses, live in groups to protect themselves from predators. They also have big tusks that can be used to defend themselves. Some Arctic animals migrate, meaning they move to warmer places when it gets too cold. This helps them find food and stay safe.
