California Missions: A Journey Through History

California's history is rich with stories of exploration, settlement, and cultural exchange. One important part of this history is the story of the California Missions. These missions were built long ago by Spanish explorers and missionaries.

What Were the Missions?

Missions were settlements built by the Spanish in California, starting in the late 1700s. Their purpose was to spread the Christian religion to the Native American people who lived there. The missions were also meant to help Spain claim the land as their own.

The first mission was Mission San Diego Alcalá, founded in 1769. Over the next several decades, 20 more missions were built, stretching up the coast of California. Each mission was about a day's walk from the next, making it easier to travel between them.

Life at the Missions

Life at the missions was very different for the Spanish missionaries and the Native Americans. The missionaries tried to teach the Native Americans about Christianity and Spanish culture. They taught them new farming techniques, crafts, and trades. The Native Americans, in turn, helped build and run the missions. They worked in the fields, made goods, and cared for the animals.

However, life at the missions was not always easy. The Native Americans often had to give up their own cultures and traditions. They sometimes faced harsh treatment and were forced to work long hours.
