A Day on the Tea Plantation

The sun peeked over the lush green hills of Sri Lanka, waking eight-year-old Nila. Her home, a small cottage with a tin roof, sat at the edge of the sprawling tea plantation. Today was like any other day; she would help her mother pick tea leaves.

Early Start

Nila quickly ate a breakfast of rice and lentils. Then, she grabbed her woven basket and followed her mother into the fields. The air was cool and damp, and the tea bushes glistened with dew. Rows and rows of green stretched as far as she could see. Other women, their faces covered with scarves to protect them from the sun, were already hard at work.

Picking Tea

Nila's small fingers moved quickly, plucking the newest, greenest leaves from the bushes. She had learned from her mother how to pick only the best leaves – "two leaves and a bud," her mother always said. The leaves went into her basket, which grew heavier with each passing hour. Her back started to ache, but she kept going.

A Moment's Rest

During a short break, Nila sat with her mother under the shade of a large tree. They shared a small piece of roti bread and talked quietly. Nila told her mother about the stories she had heard in school that day. Her mother smiled, proud that Nila was getting an education, something she never had.

Back to Work

The sun climbed higher, making the work even harder. Nila's hands were stained green from the tea leaves. She thought of the other children in her village who were at school learning. She knew that picking tea was hard work, but it helped her family survive. Nila tried to focus on the beauty of the landscape, the birds singing in the trees, and the gentle breeze that rustled through the tea bushes.

End of the Day

Finally, as the sun began to set, it was time to stop. Nila and her mother carried their heavy baskets to the collection center. The leaves would be weighed and taken to the factory to be processed into tea. Nila felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing she had done her part.

Back home, after washing and eating dinner, Nila helped her younger brother with his studies. Then, exhausted, she fell asleep, dreaming of a future where she could go to school every day and maybe, one day, have a different kind of life.
