A Day on the Ranch

The sun peeked over the horizon, painting the Texas sky in hues of orange and pink. For ten-year-old Mateo, the day was just beginning. He stretched, yawned, and quickly pulled on his boots. Ranch life started early, and today was no exception.

First, Mateo headed to the barn. The air was filled with the sweet scent of hay and the gentle sounds of animals waking up. He greeted his favorite horse, a chestnut mare named Rosie, with a soft pat on her nose. Rosie nudged him back, as if saying, "Good morning!"

Mateo's job was to help his dad feed the animals. Together, they carried buckets of grain to the horses, filled water troughs for the cattle, and tossed hay to the sheep. Even the chickens squawked excitedly as Mateo scattered feed across the coop. It was hard work, but Mateo felt proud to be part of it.

After breakfast, Mateo joined his older brothers, Diego and Carlos, for their morning ride. They saddled up their horses and headed out to check the fences. The Texas landscape stretched out before them, a vast expanse of golden grasslands dotted with mesquite trees. As they rode, they watched for any breaks in the fences that the cattle may have made overnight.

During the ride, they came across a calf that had wandered away from its mother. Diego carefully lassoed the calf, and Mateo and Carlos helped guide it back to the herd. Their dad always said, "A good rancher takes care of his animals," and Mateo took those words to heart.

The sun began to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the ranch. Mateo and his brothers headed back to the barn, tired but satisfied. They unsaddled their horses, gave them a final pat, and promised them a good night's rest. As Mateo walked towards the house, he knew he wouldn't trade his life on the ranch for anything. It was a place where hard work, family, and the love of the land came together in a truly special way.
